S.C. Homeowners Tax Trap

S.C. Homeowners are unaware of the “bear trap” tax the state has set… and it’s right outside your front door!

 

The good news: In 2006, together we passed a Constitutional Amendment that keeps your property taxes from going up more than 15% when property is re-assessed every five years.

 

The bad news: The General Assembly added language to that law which triggers an automatic, full-value reassessment when the property is SOLD, IMPROVED, or even PASSED ALONG TO CHILDREN.

 

This insanity is crippling our real estate values, because time after time BUYERS see the new, sky-high taxes they’d be forced to pay, then decide to back out of the purchase. Oh, and let’s not forget the homeowner who adds a $10,000 deck, only to see their taxes skyrocket.

 

Why is it like a “bear trap?”

 

Because it’s sitting there, and people don’t care about it… UNTIL it’s their time to sell, or improve, or pass the property to heirs. Only then does the trap snap shut! And that’s why it’s so insidious—No one is angry about the bear trap, except those caught in it.

 

Your statewide team at NoHomeTax.org is fighting this, with the leadership team once again making trip after trip after trip to Columbia. It is, quite frankly, exhausting and monotonous work, as the Legislators work against us by deliberately re-scheduling hearings and meetings in order to wear us down. We need your help!

 

1)    Get involved. Offer to go to Columbia. Fight the madness.

2)    Go to www.NoHomeTax.org, read the homepage, and contact your legislators.

3)    Please, help financially. Political fights are won and lost via the muscle a “war chest” provides. We can use your donations to publicly expose the legislators opposing us.
